It’s that time of year again, where all eyes turn to Vogue or TMZ to get a glimpse of the glamorous, the outrageous, and the sometimes controversial attire worn by celebrities to the Met Gala. The Met Gala, or Met Ball, is a fundraising event put on by Vogue each year to raise funding for Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute of New York City.
The event marks the opening of the Costume Institute's annual fashion exhibit and is no ordinary ball; tickets for attendance start at $35,000 and attract the wealthy and famous. Those in attendance often work with designers on custom costumes and looks - and we all want to see what they’re wearing. This year, attendees pulled together intricate looks aligned with the theme of American Independence
While the dresses are great, what really sparks our interest at Tease Hair Boutique is - you guessed it - the beautiful, intricate, creative and sometimes wild hairstyles. So, we’ve compiled a list of our favorite below.
Maisie Williams
Complementing her bleached eyebrows for the 2021 Met Gala, Maisie Williams rocked a unique hairstyle that combined lustrous shine with a wavy swoops in an intricate updo. A single curl on her forehead, Maisie’s look came together with pops of green jewelery and nails and a dramatic smokey eye.
Billie Eilish
Quite opposite to Maisie’s look was that of Billie Eilish, who forewent her standard edginess for a romantic look inspired by her favorite childhood barbie. Billie’s bleach blonde hair felt very Marylin while also bringing us back to the nineties with whispie, layered short bob style.
Lupita Nyong’o
Considered an “ode to the beauty of African hair”, Lupita Nyong’o’s looked cloud-like and whimsical during her appearance at the 2021 Met Gala. The gravity defying look framed her face beautifully with dreamy swirls that she paired with a custom made denim Versace gown.
Gigi Hadid
Stepping away from her standard sun-streaked look, Gigi Hadid rocked a retro-inspired high ponytail of shiny waves that reached the middle of her back. The fiery-red hairstyle, matched with an elegant dress and elbow-high gloves felt very Jessica Rabbit and glamorous.
Kristen Stewart
Speaking of retro, Kristen Stewart wowed with her 1950’s inspired “victory-roll” fringe and high ponytail. The strawberry blonde looks felt edgy yet girly combined with a pink lip and eye, and Kristen states the look was inspired by Rosie the Riveter.
Naomi Osaka
The centerpiece of her entire look, Naomi’s hair defied gravity with this artistic look that was inspired by her Japanese heritage. The sleek sides look almost windswept with braided rings on top, the entire look sprinkled with red gemstones, her look complete with a custom Louis Vuitton dress and black cape.
Alicia Keys
Alicia Keys wowed at this years’ Met Gala with an elegant look that combined diamonds, a sheer blouse and a romantic tulle skirt for a business-meets-debutant look. The best part? Her simple, gem-studded hair that was pulled back into a tight, low bun.
Gemma Chan
Giving a nod to Anna May Wong, the first Chinese-American film star of Hollywood’s Golden Era, Gemma Chan wore her hair tied back in a tight bun with braided loops protruding from each side and shapely bangs.
