Textured Hair Extensions & How to Care for them

At Tease Hair Boutique, we’re big fans of the transformative nature of a good hair extension. Whether you’re looking for length, volume, or testing out some new colors, they’re great for adding versatility while avoiding damage. Whatever your reason for getting them (check out all of the different uses here), there are a variety of application methods for different lifestyles including sew-in, fusion, tape-in and more. While you may have considered which is right for you, something that is often overlooked is the texture of the hair extension.

Our locks are unique, and it's important to consider how they’ll blend with your natural hair. Even if you’re planning to blowout and straighten your natural hair each time, the elements may have other plans. You don’t want the humidity to hit and your natural hair kinks up while your extensions stay pin straight (speaking from experience) so we’re happy to share that there are textured extension options to match your hair needs! In this article, we’ll dive into what textured extensions are, which might be right for you & how to care for them.

What are textured extensions?

Textured hair extensions are exactly what they sound like; hair extensions that offer curly or wavy texture to meet your hair needs. At Tease Hair Boutique, we use Covet & Mane hair extensions for the highest quality results.

Covet & Mane extensions are crafted from ethically sourced Indian temple hair, which is human hair that has undergone the highest hygiene and care routines, most often found in quality wigs as well. The wefts are meticulously cared for, de-pigmented and colored to achieve an exact match look and then hand tied into wefts for application.

To achieve the desired texture apart from sleek straight, the hair undergoes a perming treatment that produces either gentle waves or coiled curls. This treatment does not compromise the strength and health of the hair, which has been cared for with moisture and repair treatments to reduce damage.

Why Choose Wavy Hair Extensions?

Effortless Style

Wavy hair extensions effortlessly elevate your look, adding instant glamor and sophistication. Whether you're going for a casual beachy vibe or a more polished appearance, wavy extensions can be styled to suit any occasion.

Volume and Length

If you have fine or thin hair, wavy extensions can provide the extra volume and length you desire. They instantly create the illusion of thicker, fuller hair, giving you the confidence to rock any hairstyle.

Versatility

One of the biggest advantages of wavy hair extensions is their versatility. You can wear them straight, curly, or with their natural wave pattern, allowing you to switch up your look whenever the mood strikes.

Low Maintenance

Unlike natural wavy hair, which requires regular styling and maintenance to keep the waves looking perfect, wavy hair extensions are relatively low maintenance. With proper care, they can maintain their shape and texture for an extended period, saving you time and effort.

Caring for Textured Hair Extensions

Once you've selected the perfect wavy or curly hair extensions, you’ll want to care for them properly to keep hair healthy and maintain their texture. Check out this article on how to care for sew-in extensions, and here are a few tips that pertain to textured hair extensions specifically.

Washing

To avoid damaging knots and tangles, always make sure to brush your hair before getting it wet. Gently wash with a paraben free and ideally a sulfate free shampoo, most importantly using a product that is color-friendly. Break the habit of rubbing the ends of your hair together and allow suds to fall through locks. Once rinsed, apply a hydrating conditioner to the ends of your hair and leave on for 5 minutes. Avoid getting conditioner of the extension bonds, and we recommend using a weekly conditioning hair mask like Kerastase 8hr Magic Night Serum, available at Tease Hair Boutique.

Drying & Styling

After washing, remove excess water by gently squeezing with a towel. Brush out hair while still wet, making sure to hold the extensions at the base of the scalp to avoid pulling. Use a salon-grade leave-in product such as anti-frizz, heat protectant, or moisturizing conditioner. When drying wavy or curly extensions, use a diffuser on medium heat.

Vacation Care

Like any color-treated hair, swimming in chlorinated pools can cause discoloration and fading, so if possible avoid getting your hair wet when you can. Before swimming in any body of water, wet extensions and brush through, pulling into a braid to avoid tangles. After swimming, make sure to use a clarifying shampoo and conditioner and apply a moisturizing product.

Be mindful of sunscreen

Sunscreen is important to keep skin healthy, young and protected, but be aware that certain sunscreens contain avobenzone, a chemical known for changing the color and quality of your hair extensions. It’s best to use a mineral sunscreen to avoid any issues.

Bottom Line

For those who prefer some texture to pin-straight locks, curly and wavy hair extensions are a great option, especially if humid summer air makes your hair kink. If you’re interested in getting extensions, make sure to discuss this with your Tease Hair Boutique stylist at your next appointment. If you’re unsure which products are right to care for your extensions, your stylist can also make recommendations based on your specific hair needs!
